Having an issue with TRIRIGA reports when specifying association type

We have a report using the triContactRole object. This object has multiple associations to the parent object. We have user filters on this object. When the users enter a criteria on any of the fields in triContactRole, we run into problems. If I create the report using Association type = All, then the report runs very quickly, even with user filters, but shows duplicate records. If I limit the Association Type to only the one I need then the report takes too long and the users get a timeout error.

If anyone has any insight into why specifying the association type in a report would cause this behavior, please post.
